Kitchener Island: A Complete Guide to Discovering this Hidden Gem
Kitchener's Island is a small island in the Nile at Aswan, in southern Egypt, between Elephantine Island and the west bank of the river. It is a botanical garden, a green and quiet place in the middle of the river, and one of the easiest and most relaxing stops on a visit to Aswan.
Where is Kitchener's Island?
The island lies in the Nile in front of the city of Aswan, close to Elephantine Island. In Arabic it is called Geziret el-Nabatat, "the Island of Plants". There is no bridge: you reach it by a short boat ride, usually on a traditional felucca, the sailing boat of the Nile.
History of the island
The island takes its name from Lord Kitchener, the British commander of the Egyptian army, who was given it in the late 19th century. He turned it into a garden and planted trees and flowers from Africa, Asia and other parts of the world. Today it is a public garden and a botanical garden, and it is known for its collection of plants that are unusual in Egypt.
What to see on Kitchener's Island
- Tropical and exotic plants: palm trees, flowering shrubs and trees from many countries, in walkways shaded from the Aswan sun.
- Views of the Nile: the felucca sails, Elephantine Island and the tombs and hills of the west bank.
- Birds: the island is a pleasant place for a slow walk and for birdwatching.
How to visit Kitchener's Island
Most visitors go by felucca from the Aswan corniche and combine the island with a trip around Elephantine Island or the Nile. It is easy to fit into a half-day of sightseeing in Aswan. The cooler months are the most pleasant for walking in the garden, and late afternoon gives soft light and a lovely sunset on the river. Opening hours and prices can change, so it is best to confirm them before you go.
